Film review: Season Film Festival - American Honey
American Honey
Director / Writer: Andrea ArnoldCast: Sasha Lane, Shia LaBeouf, Riley Keough
I recently read interesting Facebook post. It was young male writing how "older people" were complaining how youngster are all horrible, do nothing useful but just drink, waste time and do horrible things and so on. This young male wrote that these ladies and gentlemen who were complaining used to be young too and did those same things as well. And even if some people are acting horrible and doing criminal things it doesn't mean that all of the (young) people are the same.
I agree with you young male! I just hope you would have written to that same post: Why don't you people go and fix the holes in our economy that you created. Since our some / most of youngsters are basically fucked. It is very rare for young adult to be able to afford school, food, own apartment, get a decent permanent job and so on. All of those things used to be no-brainers for people.
I remember my dad once asking me: Why don't you just walk in to worksite and ask for a job. It was so easy previously. Now you need all kinds of educations and social media presence and what not to land a entry-level job. With current apartment prices it is very hard to get a place and be able to afford it. Banks don't just give loans anymore, but they can actually fall and you end up with nothing.
Well enough of that. I know that things have been bad before too and we are now actually better off than previously. But it is true what I just wrote and what that young male wrote too. It's not always up to you. No matter how much you try and do things, as a kid someone else can fuck your things royally up. And the older generation has fucked many things up for us.
American Honey is a great story of cast-aways trying to make a life for themselves. These kids are doing what is needed to be done to support for themselves and making their dreams come true. It wasn't their choice to be poor, not wanted and used by others. But they are working hard towards better future and doing whatever is possible for them to do.
It is a beautiful movie that will leave you longing for those summer days and nights. It makes you think how badly things could be. It makes you grateful for everything you have in your life.
It is almost 3 hours long and more of a documentary than a movie.
But it is also road-trip movie, coming of age movie, on point, it is sad and hopeful. It shows the ugly side of poverty in America and what type of situations kids need to tolerate. It shows how economical status and wealth has divided USA and how some people are living in the land of plenty and opportunities while others don't even have a thing to eat.
During this movie I kept thinking that could be me. My life could be so different right now. It was "nothing new" for me. But I bet for some people it is much needed eye-opener.
American Honey reminded me of Easy Rider and Sofia Coppola. And Shia LaBeouf has definitely grown into great actor!
Must see.
